After years of dominating endurance racing, Porsche took a bold step forward in 1986 with the introduction of a a seven car run of 944 Turbos, purpose built for the SCCA Escort Endurance Racing Series. Delivered to Holbert Porsche, the U.S. importer, and later sold to Sewickley Porsche, this car was actively campaigned from 1986 to 1988, making its mark in the highly competitive endurance circuit.
In 1987, it saw action with none other than factory Porsche drivers Derek Bell and Bill Adams—wearing the iconic Rothmans livery. As an early factory-built race variant, it featured a magnesium intake manifold and oil pan, upgraded racing suspension, and a factory roll cage. Additional lightweight components, including a fiberglass hood, special offset Fuchs wheels, and lightened glass, enhanced agility, while lowered rear-end gearing and an upgraded turbo pushed output to approximately 350 HP.
Having retained its original factory race motor and transmission, this 944 Turbo remains an authentic piece of Porsche endurance racing history. Recently, it underwent a comprehensive restoration by Vintage Motoring and European Auto in Miami, Florida and spent time on display at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The car is accompanied by immense documentation and its original leather/cloth driver’s seat to match the passenger seat.
Now offered for sale under its original MSO, this incredible piece of motorsport history is eligible to be registered for street use in the U.S.—in most States.
